Beginners Guide to Iodine.

For those just starting Iodine supplementation, here are some standard hints.

It is often suggested to start your daily routine of taking the companion supplements at least a week before starting Iodine. These include Magnesium, Selenium and Vitamin C that are needed for Iodine to work properly. It is a good idea to test for Selenium levels, since taking too much when you already have normal Selenium levels risks toxicity. Selenium functions are only partly understood, but it is clear that there is a narrow range between too little and too much Selenium. If you test normal in Selenium, the Selenium dose is not as critical and many people take less in that case.

Regarding unrefined salt, you only need the recommended 1/2 tsp of Salt a day as a companion supplement, throughout the day with food as seasoning to taste is OK. Salt "loading"...some call it not the same thing. It is a strategy to be used only when and IF you get detox symptoms, (including headaches, weakness, nausea, stuffy feeling, just as a few examples) usually caused by high amounts of Bromine/bromide or possibly Fluoride and other toxins that are displaced by Iodine in quantities high enough to overload your elimination pathways. The Salt "loading" helps to clear the elimination pathway overload by flushing toxins out with the expected copious urination (be sure to drink extra water with salt loading).

Finally, as to when to take the companions, for the salt, Selenium, Vitamin C (half an hour away from iodine), take with water after meals. Magnesium, depending on what form as to what time of day you take it. Malate like Jigsaw is for energy so in the morning, glycinate is for relaxation so it is best taken at night time or whole food like Grown By Nature is suitable for any time of the day. Aussie Sea Minerals is an Ionic form and well absorbed. Transdermal Magnesium Moisturiser is also a well absorbed method. 5mg per pound of body weight or 10mg per kilo is maintenance dose, use more to rise, please don’t jump into full dose if using synthetic form or you may spend the day on the loo.

When taking Iodine, taking it too late in the day can make it difficult to get to sleep, at least at first for some...all the time for many people. This is because it increases awareness and energy to some extent. It is usually best to take Iodine first thing in the morning just before getting some food in the stomach, or right after getting a little food in your stomach.... some people take it on a full stomach. You need to dilute the drops of Lugols in water...up to 5 drops of 5% in a juice or glass of water at one time to minimize irritation to the throat. In milk it has no flavour. Rinse after each with a comparable amount of plain water.

You will find what works best for you with experience day after day. 1 drop of 2% = 2.5mg per drop, 1 drop of 5% = 6.25mg per drop. 20 drops of 2% = 50mg, 8 drops of 5% = 50mg. **Just be careful not to mix Lugols with anything containing Vitamin C, before taking it, and wait at least 10 minutes after a dose of Lugols before drinking a juice with Vitamin C or taking Vitamin C tablets. (We want to prevent Vitamin C from reacting with Iodine in Lugols because this potentially lessens its benefits)

When taking supplements, don't skimp on drinking water to rinse things down and for general hydration. As late as 1995, the 19th Edition of Remington’s Science and Practice of Pharmacy recommended between 0.1-0.3 ml (2-6 drops) daily of Lugol's 5% solution in the treatment of iodine deficiency and simple goiter.

You will see that dosage recommendations vary from 1-mg/day up to 300-mgs/day or even more. Historically, iodine was used for medical purposes soon after its discovery in 1811 by Bernard Courtois. Iodine preparations have higher LD50's than table salt, so do not be afraid to experiment.

Practically all cells in the body are designed to receive iodine. All glands (thyroid, adrenal, thymus etc.) need iodine for the proper production of hormones. Dr. Brownstein and Dr. Derry have gathered evidence that iodine deficiency is a major cause of breast cancer and other diseases of the reproductive organs such as ovarian, uterus and prostate cysts and cancers. Iodine levels in US agricultural soils have fallen 50 per cent over the past 50 years. The Great Lakes region has some of lowest soil iodine levels in the world and this results in high levels of cancers related to iodine deficiency. Dr. Brownstein has been quite successful in treating fibrocystic breast disease (cysts in the breast) with iodine/iodide supplementation. In one case a 37-year-old woman with severe fibrocystic breast disease was completely cured after supplementing with 50 mgs of iodine a day for two months. Women with larger breasts need more iodine than women with smaller breasts. Other medical authorities agree that iodine deficiency can lead to fibrocystic breast disease and/or ovarian cysts.

For protection from radioactive iodine fission by-products, the FDA/CDC have approved dosages for adults up to 130-mg of KI per day (100-mgsof iodide). An equivalent dose using 5% Lugols would be about 3/4 millilitre or around 15 drops.
When fully iodine loaded a woman's breasts naturally contain more iodine than her thyroid gland, highlighting the need in raising iodine levels more than minimum recommendations of 150ugs/day. Female breast milk contains high levels of iodine even if replete in the mother. On the other hand, no matter how high fluoride levels are in the mother, her breast milk will be almost devoid of it. Low iodine levels in women leads to estrogen dominance which leads to many other health problems.

As a food wash or disinfectant add 1-4 drops to 1 litre of water and soak vegetables and fruit for 5-10 minutes.

Iodine levels in the skin are about 30 times higher than in most tissues, serving as a first line of defence for our immune system. At least 20 percent of the iodine in your body is held in your skin, if your skin is deficient in iodine, you will not be able to sweat.

A full dropper of 5% Lugol's held in strong light is hard to see through in the cylinder section, this is a quick test for iodine concentration.

In total, the average human body carries about 1,500 mg of iodine when supplementing, your thyroid gland can hold a maximum of 50 mg of iodine. 33 percent of your body’s iodine stores are in your muscles (if muscles are depleted, pain and other fibromyalgia symptoms can develop). 

Women that supplement with milligram doses of iodine instead of microgram levels as recommended by our mainstream medical system yields babies with IQ's 15-30 points higher than either parent.

The absence of iodine in the body is a promoter of cancer. Iodine in the body raises pH, is antibacterial, anticancer, anti-parasitic, anti-fungal, anti-viral, and detoxifies. Iodine has been shown to prevent and resolve ADD/ADHD. Iodine detoxifies bromine, fluorine, mercury, lead, aluminium, and cadmium.

When taking iodine for total body sufficiency it is imperative that the following supporting nutrients be taken to facilitate best outcome: Vitamin C (from natural sources preferred)-800-1000 mgs/day of wholefood whole C (if not in diet); Selenium-200-400 mcgs/day (if not in diet); Unrefined sea salt (e.g. Celtic, Himalayan with colour)-at least 1/2 teaspoon/day; Magnesium (in a form your body can absorb) 10mgs/1kg of body weight, optional: Vitamins B2/B3 – 100 mg riboflavin and 500 mg no flush niacin, inositol hexanicotinate form, 1-2x per day. Get plenty of potassium!

Dr. Brownstein says that fluoride inhibits the ability of the thyroid gland to concentrate iodine and research has shown that fluoride is much more toxic to the body when there is iodine deficiency present. After only one dose of iodine, excretion of fluoride increases by 78%.

  • Hey! Great article! Would eating a meal high in vitamine c with cabbage and broccoli 15 mins after iodine supplementation prevent the full effects of iodine ?
